Color depicts reality. Black & White is an interpretation of reality.
Black & White Photography creates a timeless quality in images. It is a creative choice focusing on contrast, texture, shape, form, and quality of light. It can dramatically transform an image. Suitable for any genre... landscape, portrait, architectural, still life, and street photography... it is an art form worth exploring in your photography.
Color is everything to making a good black & white image. The process is then to understand how to interpret the colors into gray tones. In this workshop, we will discuss visualizing your photo from color to black & white. You will learn to use your vision to create your desired image through post-processing in Adobe Photoshop. There will also be a demonstration using third-party software programs like On1 and Nik Silver Efex.
Group Session 1 – This session will demonstrate how to create B&W images using Adobe Photoshop, which provides the most functionality. For current Lightroom users, this will be an excellent introduction to Photoshop. There are many techniques for creating beautiful B&W pictures. Every image is unique and therefore allows for various ways to bring out its best B&W quality. We will explore several approaches utilizing a non-destructive method. Demonstrations include the use of smart objects, adjustment layers, masking, burning, dodging, gradients, blurs, and much more.
Private Zoom Session (scheduled between the 2 group sessions) — Each student will leave the 1st session with the tools to convert one of their own images to B&W. This assignment is completed before your private session with Danielle, who will provide individualized feedback and editing suggestions.
Group Session 2 - We will review each student’s images to see their conversion process. Danielle will also do a demonstration of third-party software, including On1, and Nik Silver Efex, and how they can be used with Photoshop as well.
NOTE: ALL SESSIONS WILL BE RECORDED FOR STUDENTS USE
Experience Level: Ability to download images from the camera to the computer, email images, and use Zoom. Must have access to and familiarity with post-processing software, including Adobe Photoshop. Additional software will be demonstrated but not required.
